China trademark classes: all 45 in plain language

Which class is your product in? A plain-language map of all 45 classes as China applies them — with the subclass caveat that decides what a registration is actually worth.

How to read this page

  • China uses the Nice Classification (13th edition in force since 1 January 2026) — 34 goods classes, 11 service classes.
  • Beneath every class China adds similarity groups. A registration protects you inside the groups you claimed — not across the class.
  • The official fee is per class: ¥270 filed online, covering ten items.
  • The table below is orientation in plain words, not the governing text. Filing happens from the Chinese edition, at subclass level.
Class 1Industrial chemicals
Class 2Paints and coatings
Class 3Cosmetics and cleaning preparations
Class 4Industrial oils and fuels
Class 5Pharmaceuticals and dietary supplements
Class 6Common metals and metal hardware
Class 7Machines and machine tools
Class 8Hand tools
Class 9Electronics, software and scientific devices

The class from this site's running example: a Class 9 registration covers only the similarity groups you claimed — never “electronics” at large.

Class 10Medical devices
Class 11Lighting, heating and sanitary apparatus
Class 12Vehicles
Class 13Firearms and fireworks
Class 14Jewellery and watches
Class 15Musical instruments乐器
Class 16Paper goods and printed matter
Class 17Rubber and semi-finished plastics
Class 18Leather goods and bags
Class 19Non-metallic building materials
Class 20Furniture家具
Class 21Household utensils and glassware
Class 22Ropes, tents and raw textile fibres
Class 23Yarns and threads纱线
Class 24Textiles, bed and table covers
Class 25Clothing, footwear and headgear

The trademark litigation example on our Cases page — won at first instance and on appeal — is a Class 25 (footwear) matter.

Class 26Lace, buttons and hair accessories
Class 27Carpets and wall hangings
Class 28Games, toys and sporting goods
Class 29Meat, dairy and processed foods
Class 30Coffee, tea, staple foods and confectionery
Class 31Fresh produce and live animals
Class 32Beers and non-alcoholic drinks
Class 33Alcoholic beverages except beers
Class 34Tobacco and smokers' articles
Class 35Advertising, retail services and business management

The most argued-about class in China filings. Whether an online seller needs it depends on what you actually do — ask before you decide either way.

Class 36Financial, insurance and real-estate services
Class 37Construction, repair and installation
Class 38Telecommunications services
Class 39Transport, storage and travel arrangement
Class 40Treatment of materials and custom manufacturing
Class 41Education, training and entertainment
Class 42Scientific and technology services, software development

Software as a product sits in Class 9; software as a service sits here. The line between them is drawn by subclass, not by intuition.

Class 43Food, drink and temporary accommodation services
Class 44Medical, beauty and agriculture services
Class 45Legal, security, personal and social services

Descriptors above are our plain-language summaries for orientation — deliberately coarse. What decides scope is the Chinese text and the similarity groups beneath it, which is where the actual filing work happens.

Questions

Can I copy the classes from my US or EU registration?

As a starting point, yes; as an answer, no. The class numbers are the same everywhere — what China adds is the similarity-group layer underneath, and that is where a copied specification quietly loses coverage. Re-mapping at subclass level is precisely the step most broken foreign filings skipped. How the mechanism works →

How many classes should I file in?

What you actually sell now, plus a judgment call on where the brand travels next. The economics stay visible: each class is a separate official fee — ¥270 filed online, covering ten items. Tell us what you sell and the class map comes back with our first reply, free. How that works →

Who chooses the subclasses?

We do — that is the work. You describe the products in plain commercial terms; we map them into classes and similarity groups and show you what each choice covers and forgoes. Filing into the right subclasses is most of the job, which is why it is the first thing we do and not an afterthought.
